How to promote your stories (Wattpad)

Use short catchy titles.  Titles that are too long will give away the whole story, and will be less likely to entice Wattpaders to read your work. A shorter title is best, but including an extra snippet of information at the end of your title can increase the odds readers will choose your story. Whether it´s something along the lines of (completed) (Wattys 2016) (Star wars fan fic)- it really does help.

Be sure to include a synopsis or blurb. This is your reader´s first entry into your story.

Don´t forget to add tags to your story. Most Wattpaders search for stories using tags. By including key words to identify your story´s sub-genres and other identifying elements, you´ll make sure your story pops up in their search. Without them, your story is invisible.

Have an eye-catching cover. An attractive cover is necessary if you want to grab a reader´s attention

Keep chapters shorter rather than longer. Remember most Wattpaders are on mobile devices and read on-the-go. They probably won´t be able to get through a super long chapter.

End on a cliffhanger. Keep your readers guessing so they´ll keep reading.

Serialize. Post chapters once or more a week. The best bet is to maintain a regular posting schedule so your readers know when to check for a new chapter. If you´re transparent about your schedule, your readers know what to expect, and you´ll have a better chance of keeping them reading. In the story description, for example, you could say, “new chapters every Friday”.

Include author´s notes. Talk to your readers in the text of the story, preferably at the beginning or the end of a chapter, not in the middle. Remind them to vote and comment on each chapter, share a little about your writing process. The more you reach out to your readers on a personal level, the more likely they are to enter into a conversation with you -and give you that feedback you´re so anxious to have.

Keep writing. Remember that readers are looking for a story to read. Posting a chapter or two and then waiting for them to find you is not going to work. Your best bet for getting them to take a chance on your story is to continue updating until it´s completed. Most stories that are added to reading lists have at least 16 chapters or more, or are marked as completed.

Acknowledge followers, votes and reading list adds. When someone follows you, votes on your story, or adds your story to their reading list, send them a quick message and let them know how much you appreciate it. You can find out when they do this in your “notifications”.

Don´t forget to reply. Respond to everyone who comments or makes suggestions on your work. By responding, you´re letting them know their support is important to you.

Update your followers. Keep your fans updated with your latest activity by sending a message to all followers. If you´ve just posted a new chapter, you´re going to take a break from writing, or need help with anything, a message broadcast to all is a great place to let others know what´s going on.

Follower other writers and read their work. Get an idea of what they like, and tell them what you like about their work. Constructive feedback is always welcome, and the more you reach out to others on Wattpad, the more likely they are to check your work out. Remember, the more you give on Wattpad, the more you get.

Engage others in conversation. Does someone´s story remind you of a song, video, photograph, or personal experience? Let them know! You may have more in common with others than you think.

Ask for advice. If you ever find yourself needing help, just ask nicely.

Create unique reading lists. By compiling thoughtful and attractively titled reading lists you´re not only helping to promote the great stories you´ve found on Wattpad to your followers and others, you draw people to your profile, which gets more eyes on your own stories.

HOW DO I USE THE WATTPAD STORY WIDGET

The story widget: a new story sharing tool

We introduced an exciting way to share the Wattpad stories you love: the Wattpad story widget! This widget allows you to easily share stories on your blog or other websites by embedding the first story part. The widget´s clean and simple design lets users get a snapshot of a story before they get right to reading it.

The main screen in the widget captures all of the pertinent information about the story that has been embedded: title, story cover, writer, reads, votes, comments, genre, and tags. When you click on the arrow on the right side of the widget, the screen slides over to reveal the story description and text from the first part.

In this view, the reader can scroll down through the entire story part within the embed window. When they reach the end and want to continue reading, they can click the Continue reading on Wattpad button.

Share gives you the option to promote any story on various platforms. Beneath these options is an Embed box that contains the code needed to insert the story widget into another site.
